Meditation-induced cognitive-control states regulate working memory task performance

چکیده
Single-bout focused-attention meditation (FAM) and open-monitoring (OMM) are assumed to bias metacontrol states towards more persistent versus flexible processing, respectively. In Experiment 1, we tested whether monitoring updating of working memory (WM) representations in an N-back task with high (3-back), medium (2-back), low (1-back) WM demands (varied within participants) is affected by preceding single-bout FAM or OMM between participants compared a control group). The results showed that promotes performance the but not (3-back) demand condition, whereas did affect performance. A replication 2-back condition only (Experiment 2) no effect, 3-back 3) produced similar pattern as promoting condition. Taken together, these findings suggest does promote if capacity neither too nor low.

Meditation-induced cognitive-control states regulate response-conflict adaptation: Evidence from trial-to-trial adjustments in the Simon task.
Here we consider the possibility that meditation has an immediate impact on information processing. Moreover, we were interested to see whether this impact affects attentional input control, as previous observations suggest, or the handling of response conflict. Healthy adults underwent a brief single session of either focused attention meditation (FAM), which is assumed to increase top-down co...
متن کاملEffects of Meditation on Working Memory Czekaj,
Long-term mindfulness meditation has been suggested to positively alter biological processes and to improve attention in previous studies. The purpose of this study is to test the effects of mindfulness meditation on short-term memory through a self-created visual memory test administered in two parts, once before the experimental group was guided into a meditative state and once after being in...
متن کاملMeditation-induced states predict attentional control over time.
Meditation is becoming an increasingly popular topic for scientific research and various effects of extensive meditation practice (ranging from weeks to several years) on cognitive processes have been demonstrated. Here we show that extensive practice may not be necessary to achieve those effects. Healthy adult non-meditators underwent a brief single session of either focused attention meditati...
متن کاملSimultaneous cognitive operations in working memory after dual-task practice.
The authors tested the hypothesis that with adequate practice, people can execute 2 cognitive operations in working memory simultaneously. In Experiment 1, 6 students practiced updating 2 items in working memory through 2 sequences of operations (1 numerical, 1 spatial). In different blocks, imperative stimuli for the 2 sequences of operations were presented either simultaneously or sequentiall...
متن کاملCognitive control in context: working memory capacity and proactive control.
Working memory is important for maintaining critical information in an active state to guide future behavior. The executive-attention theory of working memory capacity (WMC; Engle & Kane, 2004) argues that goal maintenance is important for response selection when stimuli are associated with competing responses. Braver, Burgess, and Gray (2007) have labeled this type of preparatory activity proa...
